Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu

Zulu proverb · isiZulu

Literally: “A person is a person through (other) people.”

Meaning: Our humanity is realised through our relationships with others; a person becomes fully human only in community. This is the core expression of ubuntu.

Background

This is the most widely cited isiZulu/Nguni proverb and the linguistic root of the philosophy of ubuntu. It exists in cognate forms across Nguni and broader Bantu languages (e.g. Xhosa 'umntu ngumntu ngabantu', Sotho 'motho ke motho ka batho'). It became internationally prominent through its association with ubuntu in post-apartheid South African public discourse, including the language of reconciliation. It is genuinely traditional, not a modern coinage.

How it is used

Invoked to stress interdependence, compassion, hospitality and communal responsibility — e.g. when urging someone to help a neighbour, to be generous, or to recognise that individual success rests on the community. Frequently quoted in speeches, sermons, classrooms and discussions of African ethics.
