About SA Sayings

SA Sayings is an independent reference to the proverbs, idioms and sayings of South Africa’s languages — built to be accurate where so much online content is not.

Why we built it

Search for “Zulu proverbs” or “Xhosa idioms” and you mostly find scanned PDFs, forum posts and listicles — often with missing, muddled or simply wrong meanings. We set out to do it properly: real sayings, correctly spelled, with both a literal translation and a clear explanation of what each one actually means.

How we source meanings

Our sayings are compiled from documented cultural and academic sources — published proverb collections and dictionaries, university African-language resources, and established cultural archives. Where the precise meaning of a saying is uncertain, we say so rather than guess, and we leave out anything we cannot reasonably verify. Languages are living things: usage and nuance vary by region, community and generation, so we present meanings as well-supported guidance, not the final word — and we welcome corrections.

A note on messages

Our occasion messages are written to be natural and correct, and every one carries an English translation so you can see exactly what you are sending.
