The Boy Senkatana Who Slew the Monster

Sesotho folktale · ditšomo

Kwesukasukela... Long ago a vast monster called Kgodumodumo (or Kholumolumo) came upon the land and swallowed every living thing, every person and every beast, until the country lay empty and silent. Only one woman survived, hidden away, and she was pregnant. She gave birth to a boy, Senkatana, who grew with astonishing speed and strength. When the boy learned what the monster had done, he took up sharp spears and went to find the great beast, now so bloated it could barely move. Senkatana fought it and cut open its belly. From inside, alive and unharmed, came all the swallowed people and animals, streaming out into the daylight, and the land was peopled again. The nation hailed Senkatana as their saviour and made him a ruler. Yet, as the tales tell, jealousy followed greatness: some of those he had saved later grew envious of his honour and plotted against him, so that the deliverer was repaid with treachery. The story explains how the world was repopulated after destruction and celebrates the hero who restores life, while soberly noting that gratitude can curdle into envy. Cosu cosu iyaphela.

The lesson: Courage and self-sacrifice can restore a ruined world, but the envy of those one saves is a danger as great as any monster.
