History & origin
Sithole is an Nguni clan name prevalent among Zulu and Ndebele communities. Oral tradition explains the name through the verb -thola ('to find'), recalling an adopted founder taken in and protected, who rose to chieftaincy. During the Mfecane the clan dispersed widely: some Sithole left with Mzilikazi kaMashobane and settled in present-day Zimbabwe (where Sithole is a common Northern Ndebele surname), while others moved with Soshangane's Ndwandwe-derived following into present-day Mozambique, where some assimilated into Tsonga communities. A Sithole line is associated with the warrior Jobe and the broader Zulu military history of the 19th century.
