Ndlovu Clan — History & Meaning
Swati clan · siSwati
History & origin
Ndlovu means "elephant" and is one of the most widespread Nguni clan names across Southern Africa, found among the Swazi, Zulu and Ndebele. It is not a single lineage: documented oral histories record several distinct, unrelated Ndlovu groups who share the name, including Ndlovu (Gatsheni) and Ndlovu (Mthombeni) of Nguni origin and Ndlovu (Gabula) of Kalanga/Shona origin, some of whom adopted the name by translating an earlier surname meaning elephant. Among the Swazi it is one of the incorporated clans rather than one of the original bemdzabuko founding clans, and the elephant totem signifies strength and leadership.
Notable figures & facts
Because the name spans several unrelated lineages and ethnic groups, no single founding ancestor or notable figure can be reliably attributed to all Ndlovu people.
