Mhlongo Clan — History & Meaning
Zulu clan · isiZulu
History & origin
The Mhlongo are a Zulu/Nguni clan most often identified with the eLangeni (Langeni) people of what is today the KwaZulu-Natal region of South Africa. Like most northern-Nguni clans, the Mhlongo trace their broad origins to the Nguni migration into south-eastern Africa, and oral tradition links the clan's ancestry to the wider Langa/eLangeni grouping. The Mhlongo name is closely associated with the Bhebhe and Langeni lineages: in the documented record the Bhebhe and Mhlongo of eLangeni are treated as one people. The clan's chief historical importance comes from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, during the rise of the Zulu kingdom. Nandi (c. 1760–1827), the mother of King Shaka, was a Mhlongo of the eLangeni clan — a daughter of the eLangeni chief Bhebhe kaLanga. Nandi was made pregnant out of wedlock by Senzangakhona kaJama, the Zulu chief, and the union initially caused friction between the Zulu and the eLangeni. Their son Shaka kaSenzangakhona (c. 1787–1828) went on to become the founding king of the centralised Zulu kingdom. Through this maternal line the Mhlongo/eLangeni clan is directly tied to the Zulu royal house and to one of the most consequential periods in southern African history, the early Zulu state-building era and the wider upheavals of that time. Today Mhlongo is a common Zulu surname across KwaZulu-Natal and the broader South African Zulu diaspora, carried by many families who are not necessarily a single descent line but who share the clan-name identity.
Notable figures & facts
Nandi kaBhebhe (c. 1760–1827) — a Mhlongo of the eLangeni clan, daughter of chief Bhebhe kaLanga, and mother of King Shaka; she is the clan's most prominent documented historical figure and is honoured as the Queen Mother of the Zulu nation. Her son, Shaka kaSenzangakhona (c. 1787–1828), founder of the centralised Zulu kingdom, was therefore of Mhlongo/eLangeni descent on his mother's side. The clan is documented as belonging to the eLangeni grouping and as closely linked with the Bhebhe and Langeni lineages.
