History & origin

Khumalo is the royal clan of the Northern (Zimbabwean) Ndebele and originated in northern KwaZulu, South Africa, among the Mntungwa-Nguni (associated with clans such as Mabaso, Zikode and Mashobane). The clan's most famous member is Mzilikazi kaMashobane (c.1790-1868), a commander under Shaka who broke from the Zulu around 1823 and led his followers north through the Transvaal, fighting Voortrekkers in the late 1830s before crossing the Limpopo and founding the Ndebele (Matabele) kingdom of Mthwakazi in present-day Zimbabwe, with his capital at koBulawayo (c.1840). His son Lobengula succeeded him and reigned until the kingdom fell to the British South Africa Company in 1893-94. The House of Khumalo remains the royal lineage of Mthwakazi/Matabeleland.
