History & origin
Gumede is a senior Nguni clan name closely tied to the Qwabe and to the Mnguni ancestral tradition of the Zulu-speaking world in KwaZulu-Natal. In Zulu oral tradition the Qwabe and Zulu descend from a common ancestor, Malandela; Qwabe, the senior son, founded the larger Qwabe line, with which Gumede is genealogically associated, and the name is linked back through Mnguni to the deep Nguni ancestry. Gumede is widely borne across KwaZulu-Natal and is one of the prominent Qwabe-related clan identities.
Notable figures & facts
Notable bearers include Josiah Tshangana Gumede, an early 20th-century president of the African National Congress (ANC), and Archie Gumede, an anti-apartheid leader and United Democratic Front figure.
