History & origin
Dlamini is the royal clan of the Kingdom of Eswatini (Swaziland) and one of the most widespread Nguni surnames, also common among Zulu and Xhosa. The clan traces to a founding ancestor remembered as Dlamini (Dlamini I) of the Embo/Bembo-Nguni, a northern Nguni group historically located between Delagoa Bay (Mozambique) and the Lubombo mountains. Under leaders such as Ngwane III (often regarded as the first king of modern Eswatini, mid-18th century) and later Sobhuza I, the Swazi Dlamini consolidated power, with Sobhuza I shifting the centre toward the Ezulwini valley in the early 19th century. The House of Dlamini has provided the kings of Eswatini ever since. The Swazi nation's senior "true Swazi" (bemdzabuko) clans coalesced around the Dlamini kings.
