Cirha Clan — History & Meaning

History & origin
The amaCirha are one of the oldest Xhosa clans (isiduko), tracing descent from Cirha, a son of Nkosiyamntu in the early Xhosa genealogy. Nkosiyamntu is recorded as the father of four sons whose names survive as major clans: Jwarha, Tshawe, Cirha and Qwambi (Qwambe). In the traditional account, Cirha was the senior heir associated with the Great House, and on Nkosiyamntu's death authority over the early Xhosa passed to him as the eldest of the Great House line. The defining event in Cirha clan history is the succession struggle with their younger half-brother Tshawe. According to Xhosa oral tradition, Tshawe disputed the leadership and, with military assistance from the amaNgwevu (amaRhudulu) of the neighbouring Mpondomise, defeated Cirha and Jwarha (Jwarha having supported Cirha's claim). Tshawe thereby established himself as ruler, and the royal house of the amaXhosa took the name amaTshawe after him. From the Tshawe line descended later Xhosa kings including Tshiwo and Phalo. This contest is generally dated by historians to roughly the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, before the establishment of the recognised Xhosa kingdom. Although the amaCirha lost the paramountcy, the clan survived and its founder evidently left male descendants who carried the name forward, so the amaCirha (alongside the amaJwarha) persist as well-known Xhosa clans to the present day. They are historically associated with the Xhosa heartland of the Eastern Cape. Because of their senior, pre-Tshawe origin, the amaCirha are sometimes described in clan tradition as being of the "Great House" of the early Xhosa. Region: Eastern Cape, South Africa — the historic territory of the amaXhosa.
Notable figures & facts
Cirha — eponymous clan founder, son of Nkosiyamntu, regarded as a senior/Great-House heir of the early Xhosa before the rise of the royal Tshawe line. The amaCirha are remembered chiefly for the succession dispute in which their brother Tshawe, aided by the amaNgwevu/amaRhudulu of the Mpondomise, defeated Cirha (and his ally Jwarha) and founded the royal amaTshawe house from which kings Tshiwo and Phalo descend. In modern times some amaCirha have publicly asserted a historical claim to seniority in the Xhosa kingdom. The historicity of a distinct "amaCirha chiefdom" has been questioned by scholars (e.g. work associated with the Amathole Museum), who note the amaCirha existed as a clan rather than a separate chiefdom.
