History & origin
Buthelezi is an old and prominent Zulu clan of KwaZulu-Natal. Its recorded lineage runs through ancestors including Shenge and, several generations later, Ngqengelele, who rose to prominence as an adviser at the Zulu royal court. Ngqengelele's descendants became hereditary chief councillors to the Zulu kings. The line continued through Mnyamana kaNgqengelele, then Tshanibezwe, Mathole and Mathole's son Mangosuthu. The Buthelezi served for generations as senior counsellors (the chief minister role) to the Zulu monarchy.
Notable figures & facts
Mnyamana Buthelezi was chief councillor (effectively prime minister) to King Cetshwayo and a senior commander during the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War. In the 20th-21st centuries, Mangosuthu Buthelezi (1928-2023) was a hereditary chief, traditional prime minister to the Zulu royal house, and founder-leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party.
